This figure kind of came together unexpectedly. My FLGS, the Dragon, is having a "we're all stuck at home" Instagram painting contest! The terms were pretty open, but I decided that I should support them since in the midst of all this they're still operating, making local home deliveries! I ordered a couple of blisters of Nolzur's figures and this is the one I went with. Done in four days, and I think the result is pretty satisfactory :D
The kilt is a passing version of my own family's clan tartan, actually only the second time I've painted tartan on a figure.
! I'm not usually like that but IMHO it isn't gory enough.
ReplyDeleteI'm usually against overdoing blood but man, that hand looks straight out of the Halloween fiesta bargain bin. He just needs a sombrero.
Everything rings all the bells: menacing yet a kind of bearing pain expression, the fake fur texture... Very dramatic but the hand as it is now, makes the whole thing cheesy / goofy IMHO.
Feels weird as in my book weredudes are messy beasts. My childhood werewolf flicks were a mess of blood and pain. And basketball and puberty if you know what I mean.
BTW I recommend you the wolfcop crowdfunding movies. Loved them.

DeleteI have six days before the contest deadline... I'll think about adding a bit of gore, but honestly, if this guy's holding a severed hand, he should be COVERED in blood. And I can't think of a way to make that look good :/

The subtle route is to work just one spot: after all human bodies are fire hydrants.
DeleteDepending on what you are after, you can apply blood on his mouth and few drops (not splatter) on the chest as he held his victim w/ his right hand and bited off the arm...
...or just blood on his right claw (not entire hand) like he slashed off victim's hand on a scale scene, then stopped to get the price and now he's sniffing the air to find his running brunch. That could be easily complemented with a blood trail on the floor.
Just take into account blood is way too easy to overdo (if you go that route). Less is more but those tiny details send extra information to the viewer, telling a little story in a subtle way instead of being purely descriptive as in a diorama.
Look for movie shots, drawings, etc for inspiration then try to paint it on Photoshop, gimp or even MS paint host to get the approximate feel of it. Then you'll have tools to decide whether to keep working on it or leave it as is.
That's the step backwards to see the forest I wrote about in my dinorider post. It's as important to know when to stop as knowing when something is possibly going wrong and even in this case, extra work getting inspiration and testing out on the computer might prove you wrong as in the end maybe the mini looks its finest like it is now.

DeleteExcellent paint job Allison. In fact it's good enough to be placed atop a high quality wooden base that has room for a plaque. And just for laughs I would've added the comment ... "Have a look under the kilt then, I dare you ..." ;) :)

DeleteIf you add anything else it even can be a rag of a different kilt on the ground or it's right hand. As if there were 2 clans' furries fighting and one tore the other's arm off, then he went on the run.
As its part (treasure the hairy dick picture in your mind Allison) isn't connected to him anymore it reverted to its human form.
