So I'm working on these GOTA troops from Khurasan, and while I'm generally happy with the colours I've picked and how they look on their bases, I am stuck on one thing.
My robot! I don't want it to be exactly the same scheme as the troopers, and just blend in. But I don't want to do it in a wildly contrasting or too-colourful style either because I'm trying to make them look realistically military and of the same faction.
Any suggestions, oh readers?
Also, my Planet Tubby entry in the Titanium Dropship painting contest has finally been posted on Dropship Horizon, along with a lot of other very, very nice entries. Check em out, if you haven't already!
Easy, swap colors.
ReplyDeleteThey are mainly dark grey with white helmets... paint the robot white with dar, grey hints, maybe a vertical strip on his head and bis chest... grey shoulders, whatever.
Another alternative is to keep some of the plate areas in similar colours, but pick out some of the 'mechanical' bits with a metallic- Vallejo do an excellent 'Oily Steel' (VMC 865) which I use a fair bit for that sort of thing. Mind you, an ordinary steel colour with black wash and dry brush with steel again works pretty well too! (Tell me if I'm teaching my grandmother to suck eggs!).
ReplyDeleteBoth javi's and Gunny's method would look harmonized, IMO. Also, you might paint the troops first and use a special color to indicate a specific unit; then you could use this unit color somewhere on the Bot to draw the two different types of soldiers together into one homogenous team.
ReplyDeleteThanks, these are all good suggestions. I will probably go with white shell over black/metal mechanical bits, with a coloured blaze or stripe on all the figures.
ReplyDeleteHey Allison- I've done some Khurasan 'Police' Bots in just this way- white plates with steel 'chassis'. If I get a chance tomorrow night after work, I'll post some pictures.
DeleteI have nothing to add except great work on the dark suits and I love those bases. Very nice!
ReplyDeleteI keep checking everyday... paint this already, for God's sake! >:)
ReplyDeletePatience grasshopper. All I seem to be able to do these days is go to work and shovel yet more &^%#$^%ing snow. That said, these guys are a lot more done than they were a week ago.
DeleteO_o ...love the white shade you are using. Reminds me of Vallejo's model color "deck tan". Overall your corporate police-like color scheme works wonders with those minis, better than army cammo if you ask me.
DeleteGreen light eyes also gives that robot a creepy feel... as the off white looks like it's on the warmer side it makes sense to use green instead of say, blue.
Thanks for the pics, had a minute to watch 'em before going to the forge (arm hurts, damn you, anvil !) and those made my day as I had something to hink about while hammering :)
