Lady Liberty

Sunrise on Liberty
28 mm

"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

I've had this great little Hasslefree Miniatures model for ages, I probably got it in a mini exchange back when I was a regular on Cool Mini or not.  It's not a perfect replica of the actual Statue of Liberty, rather it's one of a range of figures modeled after the proprietor Kev's wife.

Anyway, for some reason I felt like now was the time to paint it up.  I wanted something a bit more dramatic than "statue on pedestal", so I tried some heavy directional lighting here, as if the statue is facing dawn over the water, complete with an unlit back and a shadow cast behind it.  I'm not super happy with how the "light" looks on the rocks or water, but the statue itself has a good warm glow that I'm satisfied with.

The "rocks" are obviously just cork, and the waves are haphazardly sculpted from clear acrylic gel medium.

  1. Fantastic. Good job on the oxidated green.

  2. I love it. I particularly like that you dared to do the shadow effect, it's not that usually seen when it comes to OSL. Fantastic.

  3. I'm glad everyone likes it! I was lucky to find just the right mix of green and blue from my oddly large number of greens and blues :)

The shadow was kind of unavoidable... If I hadn't done it that way I think it would have ruined the effect entirely.
