Flashing Storm of Blades

Xin Combat Acolytes
15 mm

Whirling dust in morning air,
Two warriors in the ring.
With the strength of two great bears,
They make their weapons sing.

Sparks fly high when steel meets steel,
And no one can believe
That these two men are best friends
Not enemies...

Combat Acolytes specialize in close-quarters fighting using edged and striking weapons, seemingly an anachronism in an era of energy blasters and autonomous battle drones.  But in shipboard and fortress assaults they show their value, storming through airlocks and corridors using aggressive movement as a weapon of its own.  Of course, it helps that they wear tough Kuijia III armour suits and are usually backed up by standard troopers with ranged weapons.  Nevertheless they train constantly, honing their abilities to the utmost balance of force and fluidity to ensure they always strike first.  Acolytes seeking a higher calling sometimes leave the service to follow the independent path of the Wu Xia.

Another day of meditation, Tai Chi and sparring...

Figures are Xin Trade Fleet Assault from The Ion Age.

  1. What strange bases, did you create these yourselves?
The level of detail you manage to put on armour, faces and hair is astonishing. They are perfect!

    1. Thank you. The bases are an experiment with making "trampled grass" bases using only sculpted putty. A bit time-consuming, I'll admit. I did the same thing on my previous "Wu Xia warriors" post, though with stones on the bases too.

  2. I also really like those bases - they are worth whatever trouble they give you, because they make your minis very distinctive (or add to their already distinctive style).
I know you don't play wargames, but these minis remind me so much of the old Heritage miniatures for Galacta (from the early 1980's). Did you ever hear of it or see the minis? They were somewhere between 15mm and 25mm and had solid bases.

    1. Thanks! I had not seen those Heritage figures before, they seem very Rogue Trader/1970's sci-fi style... very space opera! Nice. And they seem to still be available on eBay for the collector. I sometimes wonder where these things come from but if I ever have to sell off my unpainted collection downstairs I'm sure people will think the same thing about those.

    2. I grew up with Galacta. A couple years ago I went into a nostalgia fugue over it. I found the semi-defunct website of a guy who bought all the old Heritage Molds and kept them in his garage. He would produce minis on demand. I bought a huge set of them from him. Sure beats buying them one at a time from eBay.
