A Change will do you good

Chaos Warrior of Tzeentch
28 mm

This figure is actually a conversion I did... ten years ago?!  It's based on a Heroquest chaos warrior, with some added greenstuff and a Tyranid arm.  It's been sitting around for all that time, waiting to be painted.

I'm very happy with how the Thousand-Sons-like colour scheme worked out, and kind of wish I'd extended it to more of the armour.  But maybe it stands out more this way.  The skeleton on the base is, I think, an atmospheric touch.

Chaos brothers from another mother...

And another small project I finished recently:

Three Witches
15mm

You've got to pick up every stitch...
Must be the season of the witch

These CP models classic-style witch figures are admittedly not my best paint jobs ever... But I like their poses, which together rather remind me of Charlie's Angels 🙂

The Sentinel

Ominous Xenoartifact
65 mm tall

I can never look now at the Milky Way without wondering from which of those banked clouds of stars the emissaries are coming. If you will pardon so commonplace a simile, we have set off the fire-alarm and have nothing to do but to wait.

I do not think we will have to wait for long.

- Arthur C. Clarke "The Sentinel", 1951

A Fenris Games resin model.  It makes an impressive 15mm piece, or a merely disturbing 28mm one ;)

Addendum: a better idea of the scale here...

The Thing That Should Not Be

Tentacled Vivisectionist
15 mm

Straight out of hell
One of a kind
Stalking his victim
Don't look behind you

Nightcrawler

The chaotic, murky underlevels of Dropfall city are home to secretive criminal gangs, the diseased or mutated, and the merely poor and desperate.  Rumours of far more sinister denizens abound; in a lawless world where inhabitants can simply disappear for any one of a thousand reasons, a predator can select victims with total freedom.  The Vivisectionist intends to learn the biomechanical secrets of all sentient species, one flayed and twitching body at a time.

Amarjit battles through gibbering revenants, intent on taking the fight to their
hideous master.  Will her blades end its terrible reign, or will she end up as its
latest experimental subject?

Figure is a Reaper "Darkspawn Familiar", intended for 28mm scale.

Skin in the game

Flayed Fanatics
15 mm

Ain't logical. Cuttin' on his own face, rapin' and murdering.  Hell, I'll kill a man in a fair fight...  But these Reavers, last ten years they show up like the bogeyman from stories. Eating people alive? Where's that get fun?
- Jayne Cobb

"Grr Argh!"

Once again, I got a chance to paint some pre-release Khurasan figures.  These are "The Flayed, which are fallen human followers of the false prophet who have their flesh flayed off and fight with berserk frenzy until they die".  Pretty gruesome stuff, but most fitting for what is apparently going to be a "Hollywood-style book of Revelations" type post-apocalyptic range.

"Mulder, how is that even possible?  They should be dead or in shock!" "Less questions more bullets, Scully!"

Waterside weirdo

Cultist of the Octopus God
15 mm

God knows what the acolytes of the Tentacled One are up to down by the pier; it can't be anything but horrific.  Perhaps a shipment of ghastly idols and arcana, or doomed sacrificial victims being brought in from wherever they were kidnapped.  This guard is ready to skewer any interlopers with his sacred trident and send their remains to sleep with the Deep Ones.

A companion piece to these cuddly fellows.

In honour of Change

Champion of Tzeentch
28mm

Change... it can be good or bad for us. Too little change and we become inert, dull creatures of habit. Too much, and life descends into chaos, a swirling maelstrom with no direction or control. Tzeentch is the Chaos god of Change, the seducer of those who seek knowledge or power, to change the world to their advantage.

This guy is obviously based on a Heroquest warrior figure.  Plastic, easy to cut up :)  I didn't have any GW "Tzeentch horrors" to saw up for parts, so the mutated limb is based on a Genestealer arm.  The headdress, of course, is a tribute to Tzeentch's most tragic of followers, the Thousand Sons, who I have always found to be one of the more compelling stories of Warhammer 40,000.

I can't be sure when this guy will get painted... our baby is due any day now so I doubt I'll have a ton of painting time in the near future :O Change indeed!

HeroQuest Hellion

HeroQuest Necromancer ("Skeletor")
28 mm

Finally done. I wasn't sure what that sphere on his helmet is supposed to be, so I painted it as a Palantir-type black orb with point reflections.

I suppose an alternate name for him could be Lord Zuthulu ;D

Some Christmas swag from my brother:

A Reaper "Reptus Sergeant" and Confrontation "Orhain the Erudite". I believe I asked him not to buy me minis... so he compromised and dug these out of the FLGS's bargain bin for a few bucks each. I especially like the turtle guy.

And i just picked up some RAFM Call of Cthulhu Deep Ones. ♫ ♫ It's beginning to look a lot like fish men ♫ ♫...

I'm very strange, I know it.

I'm working on a new 15 mm project... and it's a weird one. Here's some rough concept art:

What the? OK, some explanation: As we all know from watching "Raiders of the Lost Ark", the Third Reich were interested in some pretty fringe stuff - occultism and black magic and so on. This is the product of some kind of Nazi occult ritual gone horribly awry on the battlefield, resulting in the tank being "possessed" by some kind of demon or entity :O Kind of like the Chaos vehicles in Warhammer 40,000.

I'm basing this on a 15 mm Flames of War tank, and probably some GW Chaos or Genestealer bitz for the legs, since I'm not such a hot sculptor... I might have some mixed troops (Allied AND German) trying to destroy the thing, to emphasize what a universal menace it is. Should be fun :)

Monkey Demon
20 mm

All done... no water reflections anymore since I'm not feeling very masochistic right now.

Reflections

So this doesn't look much like a reflection of fire on water, does it?

In fact, it looks more like sugar-tripping schoolchildren threw craft paints at a moving target as some kind of demented performance art project. Pity, that. Oh well, try, try again.

New projects

Monkey Demon
20 mm

This came all the way from Italy, so I'll try and paint it well. He kind of reminds me of the art from Hellboy, for some reason.

M3A1 Stuart tank
15 mm scale

An American tank of WW2. My brother, who loves these little tanks, got me this for Christmas. As usual I've added some extras to make it look lived-in. Soldiers in the field tend to accumulate useful things if they can, because the only thing worse than being shot at, is being shot at when you're cold, wet and hungry.

There's never an octopus wrangler when you need one.

The very deep did rot : O Christ !
That ever this should be !
Yea, slimy things did crawl with legs
Upon the slimy sea.

Some sculpted tentacles seemed right for this guy's base. He's not quite done; I still have to do some highlighting, detailing etc.

Little Rotter

Nurgling
12mm

Just a small piece to get me back in the swing of things after a four month painting hiatus! More to come soon, hopefully.

"And slimy things with legs did crawl, upon the slimy sea"

Great Cthulhu
65 mm

If I say that my somewhat extravagant imagination yielded simultaneous pictures of an octopus, a dragon, and a human caricature, I shall not be unfaithful to the spirit of the thing. A pulpy, tentacled head surmounted a grotesque and scaly body with rudimentary wings... It represented a monster of vaguely anthropoid outline, but with an octopus-like head whose face was a mass of feelers, a scaly, rubbery-looking body, prodigious claws on hind and fore feet, and long, narrow wings behind. This thing, which seemed instinct with a fearsome and unnatural malignancy, was of a somewhat bloated corpulence...
— H.P. Lovecraft, "The Call of Cthulhu"

I only pray that when the Old Ones return, this insignificant tribute is recognized and I am one of the first to be devoured, and thus spared the witnessing of the world consumed by insanity.

EDIT: My fellow blogging painter Javi is clearly trying to curry favour with the Old Ones too...

Old School

More eBay goodies, these babies date back to 1988 or so. I guess I'm a sucker for oddities...

Dirty Fighter

Nurgle Champion

Beneath a sky of maggots I walked
Until those maggots began to fall
I gaped at God to receive my gift
Bathed in maggots 'til the planet sh*t

- GWAR, "Maggots"

Nurgle is the Chaos God of disease, contagion and decay. His followers wallow in a lethal miasma of filth and infection, spreading death and hideous plagues everywhere they go. Over them all, Lord Nurgle gazes lovingly, bestowing his vile "gifts" upon his favoured Champions.

(a companion piece to my Chaos Space Marine of Khorne)

Nurgle Champion WIP

I'm actually close to done this guy:

Cheeky bastard!

I need to finish all the brown leather and bone highlights, and fix my initial attempt to paint a "rusty" sword with sharp, shiny edges.

Here's my test piece for that rusty sword, using this 9-step method:

Working...

A few things I'm working on right now:

Nurgle Champion and Cthulhu. I might enter the former in the Toronto Golden Demon competition in May if he turns out well.

Some more 15 mm WW2 stuff: a German 8-rad armored car and an Allied Universal Carrier.

Lord of Rot

Chaos Champion of Nurgle
35 mm

Got this guy on eBay, his tab says "1988" so he's a little bit vintage. I'm painting him as a devotee of Nurgle, the Chaos god of contagion and decay, and I've sculpted a plague base similar to this one.

Also, some 15 mm bailed-out vehicle crew markers for Flames of War.
