"And slimy things with legs did crawl, upon the slimy sea"

Great Cthulhu
65 mm

If I say that my somewhat extravagant imagination yielded simultaneous pictures of an octopus, a dragon, and a human caricature, I shall not be unfaithful to the spirit of the thing. A pulpy, tentacled head surmounted a grotesque and scaly body with rudimentary wings... It represented a monster of vaguely anthropoid outline, but with an octopus-like head whose face was a mass of feelers, a scaly, rubbery-looking body, prodigious claws on hind and fore feet, and long, narrow wings behind. This thing, which seemed instinct with a fearsome and unnatural malignancy, was of a somewhat bloated corpulence...
— H.P. Lovecraft, "The Call of Cthulhu"

I only pray that when the Old Ones return, this insignificant tribute is recognized and I am one of the first to be devoured, and thus spared the witnessing of the world consumed by insanity.

EDIT: My fellow blogging painter Javi is clearly trying to curry favour with the Old Ones too...

  1. awww, a tiny little Elder God!
"Who's going to devour worlds? Are you going to devour worlds? Yes, you are!"

Really nice paint job, but I'd rather see one larger view than the multiple views. And if I haven't mentioned it before, your FoW stuff is always amazing. Keep posting!

  2. I can't help it, I'm a sucker for anything lovecraft-inspired. Looks good and really love the rocky base but maybe you should remove the original bit of base.

Pinks are awesome done but I think I never pictured a pinky Cthulhu in my mind. Maybe something colder, like purple or blue would do the trick for me.

The elder thing appearing on the Soul Reaver videogames have a nice palette that evoques ancient evil from the deep.

Hey since you paint 15 mm too... why not adding a couple of unlucky tiny guys at it's feet? That's a thing I always wanted to do on mine ;)

  3. Hey, looking at it carefully I noticed something; did you applied green glazes to the right side of the rocky base? If so, congrats since its subtle and gives it an unnatural look! I also noticed the name was carved on the rock, again done in a very subtle fashion.

About the pic itself... you got the white "floor" looking beached bone and a slight shadow but still looks awesome. Where did you get the background, blue spray-can over a white paper ?

PS: stitches on it's bottom. No poo allowed in R'lyeh :)

  4. Lucky you the HP Lovecraft historic society don't belong to GW... if so, they had put a horse head on your pillow for violating the IP :))

Love reading it again and again... Oh I recommend The lurker in the threshold. Derleth did a good job there and is the first time the elder sign was described (HPL never did himself).

    Thanks for the link, Sir.
