Champion of Rot

Smegatron the Pallid

28mm scale

Once his armor was gleaming and white, now a mass of scraping rust and foul suppurations. On the battlefield he swings a deadly flail, its spiked heads spewing contagious vapors even as they crush his enemies. One chain has snapped, but a helpful Nurgling has leapt up to take its place...

I popped into my local game store a while back and there was, by Father Nurgle's poxy benevolent hand, a single Series 3 Space Marine Heroes box left there.  So I bought it.  GW blind-boxing these is cynical bullsh*t, but I will not lie, the model is a good one.  It avoids most of the problems with plastic sprue figures, and its icky, Nurgley design is uncompromising.  I love it!

"Scabboth".  I chose the other head option and it's definitely better.

  1. Not a fan of the randomness of blind boxes either, especially not at such premium prices.

Regardless, this is indeed a really nice sculpt with lots of appropriate Nurgle character for sure. I love the dirtied white armour choice. Great stuff

    1. Thanks, I'm glad you like it! I don't know why I wanted to do a Nurgle figure in "white"(ish), but it immediately came to mind when I opened the box.

Honestly, Series 3 of these blind boxes is a lot better than the previous two. Some of those were just plain old Space Marines! But thankfully, every Nurgle model has personality baked in, even the lowliest Nurgling 😄

  2. I think you're right, Nurgle is full of personality, and you can make almost any mini instil their own charm. This is the better example! Good job

    1. Thanks! While GW's Chaos models are sometimes a bit over the top, they at least have loads of personality. There really isn't a "rank and file", with Chaos 😄

  3. Lovely work on such fun models to paint.

I love painting Nurgle models: they are loads of fun. I painted a pretty large Nurgle marine army in white at the turn-of-the-century, and I do have an urge to revisit it over the last few few years.

The blind buy aspect has zero appeal to me, but some people actually seem to enjoy it. Those sculpts are nice though.

    1. From an individual figure painter standpoint, this series has no duds. If you pick up two or three boxes, you're going to get two or three of the craziest, most hardass, Nurgle Marines you'll ever see (and hopefully no duplicates 🙄). For a completist who wants to own every model, it would be a challenge...

An entire army done in this kind of pale scheme would look amazing. Just a different take on models that are usually painted in green and brown. Glad you like!

(I'm glad to see that people still visit here. My enthusiasm for posting waned for a while because I thought that nobody was reading. I'm always really happy to see a few regulars drop by 🤗)

    2. I'm delighted to be one of those old regulars :)
I do my best to keep up with online hobby stuff (both incoming and outgoing), but these days the time required us usually in direct competition with actually working on hobby stuff or playing games, and they win that competition every time.

As for pale Plague Marines, I have a soft spot for them for many reasons, but particularly for this one:

    3. Those look great, definitely a unique and unsavory look! I'd be proud if I made it into White Dwarf too 😮

I find that Instagram is a "motivational hazard" that sucks up some painting time, but I justify it by all the inspiration I get there. I've had some great ideas recently from seeing other people's stuff on Insta.
