City 17 Survivors

Gordon Freeman and Alyx Vance
15 mm

(This post has a soundtrack)

Well, I finally finished my "dream miniatures" that I started back in March.  Painting these was a genuine pleasure, despite having to squeeze them in around the ever-increasing time constraints of "real life".

Not perfect likenesses, of course.  Gordon looks less nerdy and a bit more badass in opaque sunglasses, and I rather like darker-skinned Alyx.  I converted the boxy, generic gun that was on the original sculpt to at least resemble the Combine Pulse Rifle from the game - an incredibly potent weapon.  With more sculpting mojo, I might have tried for the Gravity Gun...  As for painting, I wanted figures that would really "pop", and so went with the high-contrast style that I'm getting better at (as well as contrasting Gordon's colorful armour with Alyx's subdued street clothes).

The base turned out well in my opinion, I didn't want anything too flashy that would distract from the figures.  But I think it's suitably thematic.

  4. Beautiful work, Mr.M. Your pointy brush and steady hand should be insured at Lloyds of London. These are very expressive sculpts, and you've given them "life."

  5. Brilliant Allison! I'm almost afraid to paint mine now, you've done such a good job. Half Life is one of my all-time favourite games, so this post makes me smile!!

    1. Noooo don't be afraid. But also, don't look at the paint job on Khurasan's web site. That IS scary. Anyway glad you like these; like I said, so much fun! Bonus invisible internet points if you give your Gordon the gravity gun. Someone's gotta do it.

  6. Thanks for the kind comments, everyone. I should add that I set up a wet palette to work on these - just a sheet of damp palette paper (i.e. parchment/baking paper) on a wet sponge in a sealable tupperware container. It really increases working time of mixed colours and is also good for dabbing extra paint off your brush without it drying on the brush. I've used it for canvas painting before, but not for this.

  7. Your style is starting to remind me of wappel's as colors and highlights feel like canvas' brustrokes in an exaggerated yet nice way. I'm glad you kept the base subtle to maintain viewer's focus on the figures.

You've done a GJ again, congrats!

  8. Brilliant job on this piece Allison! Really perfect use of color in 15mm, and very slick modeling as well. Bravo!

  9. Wow, you really have gotten fantastic at that high contrast technique. I am reminded of the style of Massimiliano Corso from way back when I frequented the cmon boards. He could take any color pretty much all the way up to white. Really, really great work.

    1. Thanks... I had to look him up: your memory is better than mine. But, wow. Of course I can't claim my painting is as smooth as his, that's unreal :P
